All of us are wishing for peace on earth and goodwill towards all men this holiday season but many times our spending does not reflect those same wishes. Did you know that many items you will buy this Christmas season were made by child labor, in sweat shops and by trafficked individuals? It's important to be informed about the companies you support, but who has time to check into each one- especially during the holidays? One way you can guarantee you are supporting families with dignity is to shop fair trade.
Our items are handmade- with dignity. We can promise you our women are paid fair wages for their items, they do not work in a factory and the sale of each item is helping improve their lives. We didn't set up a company we set out to transform lives. We are doing that through this project.
This year giving dignity, hope and joy is as easy as decorating for Christmas. Our women have been working hard to create some decorations that are not mass produced in a factory. These are a lot more that decorations- they are works of art. We hope you will find a way to keep them out all year long.
Radha and Karuna are creating this fabric bead garland from scraps of cloth left over from local tailoring shops. It's gorgeous on a tree but we really hope you will keep it out all year long.
Kavita and Anita have been working all year so we could have some tree skirts to sell this holiday season. Their tree skirts are also made from fabric scraps and take them a month to create each one! Here we are at the holiday and we only have a few listed on our website. The sale of their seasonal decor fully supports these widows and their children all year long.
Our star ornaments are a favourite. Both of these are crafted from recycled material as well. The paper stars are made from magazine paper while the bamboo stars are crafted from hand broken bamboo pieces. These are sold by the dozen and support our young moms.
Not only are these items all handcrafted- they are made from recycled material. It's hard to think about the environment when the US alone will dump 4 million pounds of wrapping paper into landfills this Christmas. Every little bit helps- so we are doing our part. You can join us by using recycled gift bags made from sarees. These are useful throughout the year or re-gift them. Whatever you decide know you are supporting women, families, dignity and hope when you shop at The White Peacock this holiday season.
